Joel Madden, the lead vocalist of Good Charlotte, has been with the band since its inception in 1996. His distinct voice has been a defining feature of the band’s sound across all their albums. Alongside his brother Benji, Joel has been a constant presence in the band, contributing to the writing and creative direction of their music. It’s a lot darker and heavier, it’s much more of a straight-up rock record. A lot of bands maybe get softer when they got older but we thought it’d be fun to go hard.

I think a lot of young bands, when they achieve success, everything’s awesome. But then the first moment things take a step backwards or don’t go like they think they’re going to go, they go into panic mode and start pointing fingers and placing blame and things start to crumble and fall apart. But the four of us have been together in the band for almost 20 years, and our drummer, Dean, has been in the band for 12 or 13 years now. So we’ve been through a lot of stuff together and we have a pretty tight bond. We respect each other within the band as well as outside of the band. But when we show up and get together we’re all there playing for the same reason.

A lot of bands would be ashamed, but we know that we could never play places like that on our own. The show is in the round, which is another thing we have never done before, so everything seems a little warped at times, but it has worked out great. MADDEN One thing I would say, if I can give any young artist any advice, is you’ve got to learn to follow your instincts, because that’s the only thing that’s going to guide you. There’s not an A&R guy that’s going to do it, or a producer or a label person or whoever. As an artist you have to learn to shut out the noise and follow your instincts. Because if you look outward you’re just going to end up doing something that’s inauthentic to yourself.

MADDEN The music definitely was important, in terms of pulling out the lyrics. But it all worked together to pull out this lyrical and melodic content. On December 8, 2017, the band released a three-song EP, A GC Christmas, Pt. 's Last Christmas, a full-band version of their previously unreleased song, Christmas by the Phone, and an alternate version of Let the World Be Still, originally by their side project, The Madden Brothers.
This album was suggested a different sound for the group apart from the group's pop punk roots. Good Charlotte came together in 1996, when five high school friends from Maryland picked up instruments for the first time and joined forces to form a band, while still learning how to play.
